Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy has been there for more than 2 decades now but is probably most known to be used for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It applies scientifically established principles of learning and motivation combined with procedures derived to solve socially significant behavioural issues.
At Autism Rocks Support Centre, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Services are offered under the supervision of our Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Mr. Nicholas Orland, MS, BCBA, LBA. Within this department, children receive ABA therapy often addressing skill development in areas such as adaptive behaviour, communication, and academics. Individualized treatment plans are developed to reduce problematic behaviours and increase a wide range of functional developmental skills. Because we believe that parents and teachers are an integral component of children’s growth and success, we regularly collaborate as partners to ensure well-designed plans and establish a true team approach. Special focus is also placed on supporting parents and teacher with strategies that foster generalization of all skills taught.
Inclusion services are offered to give an equal opportunity to children with challenging behaviour or determination so they can be included in the activities or environments with other children usually in a school environment.
For families who are experiencing challenging behaviours with their child, we offer parent training. The Parents first schedule a complimentary consultation with the BCBA® at Autism Rocks Support Centre to discuss ways in which our team can support them. The BCBA® will focus on understanding the cause of the child’s undesired behaviours and the parent’s expectations.
After the initial parent consultation, the BCBA® will schedule an observation where the child’s undesired behaviours take place. The BCBA® will develop practical strategies and design a Behaviour Plan for the family to implement. This option may be used in any family situation and is frequently used with neuro-typical children as well as developmentally delayed children.
School Consultations should be scheduled by the school or teacher when challenges in school environments are causing the teacher or students distress. For example, if the classroom dynamics are cause for concern or one student tends to trigger other students to become disruptive, a school consultation could be beneficial to learn new ways to react and address such issues. The consultation consists of the BCBA® conducting an observation in the classroom, behavioural recommendations will then be provided. The BCBA® will meet with the school’s team to discuss how to implement strategies to improve classroom environment.
